Halloween Safety for Homeowners - Buy a Home in Aspen
Halloween is just a few days away, so now’s the perfect time to cover trick-or-treater safety… from a homeowner’s standpoint.

Halloween Safety for Homeowners

The candy’s all set to go and there are just a few decorations to put up before the big night.
But are you ready for all those trick-or-treaters? (And is your homeowner’s insurance ready, too?)

Halloween Safety Tip #1: Be Fire-Safe

Nearly 34,000 fires were reported to emergency responders between 2009 and 2011 on October 30 and 31, and November 1.
Why?
Pumpkins can tip with the slightest jar from an excited 6-year-old, but paper lanterns containing candles are even more dangerous. If you’re illuminating the outdoors, do it with flameless candles or lanterns.

Halloween Safety Tip #2: Keep the Paths Clear

Kids are extremely excited on Halloween, and often, they run from house to house (we did it, too, remember?). However, as a homeowner, it’s in your best interest to make sure kids have a well-lit path to the candy—and that the path is free from debris or hazards. Your homeowner’s insurance will most likely (but not always) cover accidents on your property, but it’s always better to prevent them if you can.

Halloween Safety Tip #3: Keep Your Four-Legged Family Members Safe

Cats and dogs can become agitated easily when there’s lots of traffic at your front door, so you can help them avoid stress (and keep them from bolting through the door when it’s open) by confining them to a back room with the door closed.
