LED lights vs CFL lights in your aspen home - aspen homes for sale
When it comes to interior lighting, both LED and CFL bulbs are energy-efficient alternatives to the standard incandescent lightbulb. Each has its own set of lighting characteristics, however, and with incandescent bulbs being phased out in the near future, it’s important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of both LEDs and CFLs.

LED Lighting

Despite their higher purchase price, LEDs are a longer lasting bulb, which means that you will be buying fewer bulbs over time. LEDs are compatible with standard light fixtures without the use of adapters.

What is an LED Light?

LED stands for light emitting diode. It is a semiconductor device that generates light when electrical current travels through it.
The strength of light produced by a single LED is meager, so multiple LEDs should be used for practical purposes.
A proper design of LED bulbs ensures durable and efficient lighting.

CFL Bulbs

Compact fluorescent bulbs, or CFLs, are miniature versions of the standard fluorescent lightbulb.
Despite their size, CFLs fit into all standard sockets. At first glance, they are reminiscent of the incandescent bulbs we’re all familiar with. However, they have a far more pleasant and diffused lighting characteristic than the harsh illumination we tend to associate with school or office interiors.

The Downside to CFLs

The downside to CFLs is that they contain mercury, which is not much of an issue unless they break, in which case the cleanup can be a bit problematic. Mercury is a dangerous heavy metal, making proper cleanup and disposal of CFL bulbs critical.
You should never place a used CFL bulb with the rest of your trash. Review information provided by your local waste management company or public works department to ensure proper disposal.

What Lighting is Best for You?

Both LEDs and CFLs are efficient ways to light you home, and both will work with all of the sockets, lamps and fixtures you already own. If you enjoy a directional light for reading, cooking or working at home, you might prefer the LED bulbs. For general home lighting, such as illuminating a room, CFL might be best.
You can always combine these technologies in different parts of your home according to the requirements of different rooms. Try some LEDs in the kitchen over your workspaces and over the home office desk. Use CFLs in the living room and bedroom lamps. Over time, you may develop a preference or find that you prefer one over the other in a particular application.
