If you’re like many people hiring a moving company, you may have elected to pack at least some of your belongings yourself. Whether you’re packing all your boxes or just the personal and irreplaceable items, there are a few tips to follow to help reduce the stress of preparing for moving day.
Don’t Put Off Packing
No matter how excited you may be to move into your new home, no one looks forward to packing. That makes it all too easy to procrastinate. However, putting off your packing until the last minute increases the chance that you’ll break or lose some of your belongings. It also makes your whole move more stressful. Pack the things you can live without as early as possible.
Create Detailed Labels and Inventory Your Belongings
Your movers will inventory the large items and boxes during your walk-through. It’s a good idea for you to keep a notebook detailing the contents of each room, including what’s inside the boxes. Should any disputes arise, you’ll be glad to have your own inventory checklist to refer to.
Additionally, label each box with not only the destination room in your new home, but also with the contents of the box. Inevitably, you’ll need a particular item before you’ve unpacked in your new home. This can save you hours of searching.
Keep Essential Items Handy
Every family member should have a suitcase containing enough clothing and toiletries for a few days. Other items to keep with you rather than on the moving truck may include:
- Phone, tablet and chargers
- Snacks and drinks
- Slippers or house shoes
