If you’re holding an open house to sell your home, you face a big question: What should you do with your stuff?
Here’s what you need to know.
What Should You Do With Your Belongings During an Open House?
When you’re holding an open house, a lot of your personal belongings should leave home with you. Don’t leave behind jewelry, prescription medications, or anything that has sensitive or personal information. Buyers will look at everything – and it’s impossible to run a background check on everyone who comes through.
But what about the rest of your stuff? Where should you put it all when you’re leaving for an open house?
First things first: Disorder spells disaster at an open house. Before you list your home, it’s a good idea to take out everything you haven’t used in the past 6 months. That’s because you need to show buyers just how much space you have – and because there’s a low likelihood that you’ll use those items between now and the time you pack up your house to move.
You want buyers to envision themselves living in your space, so depersonalize while you’re at it. Kids’ drawings and report cards need to come off the refrigerator, and family photos need to be replaced with neutral decor.
Where should you put it?
In a storage facility.
If that’s not possible, see if you can stash it with a friend or family member while your house is on the market. Otherwise, box things up and put them in the garage or the basement, where buyers expect to see the things you’re going to move.
