What Are the Five Elements in Feng Shui?

The belief that all things consist of varying degrees of five elements drives feng shui decorating. The elements are:

  • Fire
  • Wood
  • Earth
  • Metal
  • Water

In feng shui, each of those elements has its own color to represent it. They work together or against each other. For example, in a “constructive” cycle, water provides moisture for trees (wood), and wood becomes fuel for fire. In a “destructive” cycle, metal can cut wood instead.
