fly fishing carbondale co
People who live in Carbondale love the fly fishing. During summer and fall, residents head to the beautiful rivers known for plenty of fish, spectacular views and fresh, clear air.
So if you’re fly fishing in Carbondale, where should you go?

Crystal River

The fish tend to be smaller in the Crystal River, but you will find rainbow trout, whitefish and a number of other types, as well. If you choose to fish in this picturesque river, the Elk Mountains make a stunning backdrop.

Frying Pan River

The world famous Frying Pan River is teeming with the massive rainbow trout. The river has two sections, divided by the Reudi Reservoir in the center.
The upper section of the Frying Pan River is like a high-mountain stream. The lower section, where many of the trophy fish stay, is fishable all year (even in winter!) because it’s a tail water. Even when other rivers are overflowing with spring runoff, the 14-mile lower section of the Frying Pan River is a great place to fly fish.

Roaring Fork River

Brown and rainbow trout are the most common you’ll find when you fly fish on the Roaring Fork River. Like the Frying Pan, this river has an upper and lower section.
The upper part of the Roaring Fork starts at 12,000 feet in elevation above Aspen. The lower section, which runs past Basalt, is an excellent place for catch-and-release fishing (classified as wild trout waters, this river isn’t stocked).
